报告摘要

Cell therapy is considered as “the future of medicine” and holds enormous potential for many challenging diseases including incurable and non-druggable ones. One key to the successful application of therapeutic cell encapsulation and transplantation is the material or device used to deliver the cells. However, the poor biocompatibility of biomaterials used to date remains one of the major barriers to clinical application. The currently used materials are often immunogenic and lead to fibrotic tissue formation and transplant failure. In this talk, I am going to discuss our recent effort to develop new biomaterials and encapsulation approaches for islets transplantation. Lead formulations obtained from screening in rodent models that have resulted in promising data in nonhuman primates may one day provide a better therapy for T1D patients.

马明林博士,美国康奈尔大学生物和环境工程系助理教授

Dr. Minglin Ma is an assistant professor at the Biological and Environmental Engineering Department of Cornell University. He received his PhD degree from Chemical Engineering of MIT and worked at General Electric Global Research Center. Prior to joining Cornell in 2013, he worked as a postdoc fellow in Dr. Robert Langer's lab at MIT and Children's Hospital Boston. His current research interest is to develop advanced biomaterials for stem cell-based therapies particularly for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. He is also interested in developing high throughput 3D culture platforms for therapeutically important cells such as small intestinal organoids and iPS cell-derived hepatocytes. His work has been recently recognized by the 3M Nontenured Faculty Award and the American Diabetes Association Junior Faculty Award.
